ALA’s Young Adult book awards were announced earlier today. These awards include the Alex Awards, for adult books that appeal to teens, the Michael L. Printz Award for literary excellence, and the Margaret A. Edwards Award, for lifetime contribution to young adult readers.

The 2007 Margaret A. Edwards Award:

Lois Lowry, author of The Giver, is the recipient of the 2007 Margaret A. Edwards Award honoring her outstanding lifetime contribution to writing for teens.

The Giver is a timeless classic with widespread teen appeal,” said Edwards Committee Chair Mary Hastler! “Lowry’s complex and provocative novel, translated into 22 languages, remains infinitely discussable.” Mary was quoted in the ALA’s press release about the award.

The 2007 Alex Awards:

“The Alex Awards were created to recognize that many teens enjoy and often prefer books written for adults, and to assist librarians in recommending adult books that appeal to teens. The award is named in honor of the late Margaret Alexander Edwards, fondly called ‘Alex’ by her closest friends, a young adult specialist at the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore.”
