Are you a “hipper shusher”? July 9, 2007

Sunday saw an interesting article on librarians in the New York Times Style section. The author of the article, Kara Jesella, co-author of the recent How Sassy Changed My Life: A Love Letter to the Greatest Teen Magazine of All Time, spent some time with some twenty-something librarians in New York City and Washington, D.C., and came away with the astonishing news that nowadays, librarians can have cute haircuts, tattoos, and MySpace accounts.

It seems to us that you can read the article, “A Hipper Crowd of Shushers” as a great leap forward for librarians – when was the last time librarians made the Style section? – or you can come away somewhat offended. The author makes kind of a big deal out of the “guybrarian” in the group, and she seems to imply that the injection of tattooed hipsters is in and of itself having an impact on the profession.

Worth a read and a think.
